The U.S. Embassy Celebrates Fifth Anniversary of the Gyumri American Corner
4:59am 15.07.2010
On July 15, the U.S. Embassy in Armenia commemorated the fifth anniversary of the Gyumri American Corner.
In her opening remarks, U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Karen E. Robblee said, "American Corners help increase mutual understanding between Armenia and the United States by making available information about America in a variety of formats."
In his welcome remarks, host library director Gevorg Hovhannisyan praised the five years of successful partnership with the U.S. Embassy.
On this happy occasion, the U.S. Embassy donated two new computers and more than 100 books of English grammar and fiction, as well as textbooks, and standardized testing materials.
The American Corner program officially started in Armenia in 2005. The U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Office and the National Center of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Gyumri Branch work in partnership to strengthen the programs and services provided for Shirak Marz. Over the past five years, the Gyumri American Corner has hosted more than 28,000 visitors who have borrowed thousands of books and journals and who have participated in public events such as lectures, presentations, seminars, club meetings and English classes held in cooperation with the U.S. Peace Corps.
After the official ceremony, about 70 people enjoyed the Corner’s Kids Theatre show “The Story of the Three Bears,“ which was performed with the help of U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer Elizabeth Allen. All three local TV stations -- Tsayg, GALA, and Shant --highlighted the event. Among the invited participants, there were local university rectors and vice rectors, students and U.S. Government exchange program alumni.
During the past five years of activity, the American Corner in Gyumri has become known as a center for American studies and English language programming. It’s also a fun place for students and youth who visit the Corner for socializing, free internet services and for information about America.
